A great way to incorporate our photo booth into your event is to use an existing wall or area at your venue as a backdrop.

We spent a splendid evening recently in the hands of our new pals Damn Fine Food at Melbourne’s awesome rooftop venue Tonic House Rooftop. DFF were drafted in to organise the AJF Christmas Party, styling the venue perfectly and choosing a cool brick wall as backdrop for our booth.

Plenty of venues have awesome features that make perfect backdrops for a photo booth, blending the booth in with the feel of the place. In this case, DFF combined a perfectly-styled venue with a fun theme to allow guests to show off their creativity – here with ‘2005’ as a pretty open theme giving plenty of scope as we’ll see!

Tonic House Rooftop is a very cool venue, four floors up from Flinders Lane and with panoramic views over the polished facades of the city. Sleek polished concrete floors, minimal white furniture and a pleasing amount of foliage create a sleek but cosy space that can be used year-round.

Placement is crucial for optimum photo boothing, and the brick wall used was perfect in that it was right next to the entrance to the terrace. This meant that the second thing people saw (after the amazing view) was our booth, making sure everyone got in on the fun!

We usually advise positioning our booths either beside an area of heavy footfall or a dancefloor – something along those lines. No point hiding a good thing!

As well as perfect positioning and a cool backdrop, this party had the fancy dress factor… this means that when people have put this much effort into costumes, getting printed photo booth photos of themselves becomes even more appealing.

Regardless of the daylight conditions, our radiant lighting dish made sure we caught everyone in their best light. Very flash.

As the sun went down and the lights came on, the booth really stood out in our corner as a focal point of fabulousness. Now let’s have a look at some of the booth photos in front of that lovely wall…

The pics

Charlize Theron in Aeon Flux is a pretty tough costume to nail but here we have it. Very accurately 2005 and very accurate fancy dress. Top marks.

Fear and loathing?

5

Not being an Aussie I’m not quite sure about the other costumes here but Fear and Loathing is great. Despite the movie coming out in 1998..?

Minniemal

6

Minnie Mouse is always cool but again, slightly unsure about the relevance to 2005! Still, looking good.

Mugs

7

A satisfying variety of retro scumbag mugshots here. Need some help identifying specific individuals but a nice shot for sure.

Proper Jobs

8

A real highlight of the evening, this uncanny Steve Jobs, complete with 2005 iPod pretty much stole the show. The grey-hair talcum powder on the polo neck gave away his secrets slightly but a splendid effort.

Noughties

A random selection of noughties ladies just messing about here. Exactly what should happen in a perfectly-functioning photo booth.
