Considering that horses are generally thought to be noble creatures it seems odd that dressing up as a horse should be quite so hilarious. Nevertheless, it IS hilarious, so we thought we’d pay tribute to our favourite Horse Head Heroes.

We’ll get onto our Top 5 photo booth shots featuring our glorious animal masks (available to hire!), but first let’s meet a few real-life heroes with horses for heads. Starting with this chap:

The ‘Aberdeen Horse Boy’

Aberdeen Horse Boy

As many of you may remember, the mysterious Aberdeen Horse Boy hit the headlines back in 2010 after appearing in Google Earth photos. Journalists and bloggers around the world vied to uncover the identity of the equine joker, with Channel 4 News eventually identifying him as Mr Dobbin Horsome (seriously! Article here).

Pantomime Horse Race

Greenwich Pantomime Horse Race

Yes, this actually exists. TV news crews from as far afield as Turkey and China turn up to cover this bonkers London event! Racers make their way around the Greenwich course, making regular pit stops at the many pubs in the area and raising thousands for charity. Check out the video here.

Bobby Tulloch

Bobby Tulloch was a renowned naturalist in the 1960s who lived on the island of Shetland, off the north coast of Scotland. He and his photographer friend Dennis Coutts once dressed as a pantomime horse to try to get close enough to photograph some snowy owls. It didn’t work but he’s a hero anyway.

Odysseus

Trojan Horse

The original Horse Head Hero? Okay, he didn’t exactly dress as a horse and the affect wasn’t at all comedic, but the legend of the Trojan Horse deserves a mention we think. Props to you Odysseus.

Now, onto some more contemporary examples and followers in these fine hoofprints. Our Top 5 Horse Head Heroes picked from some of our past events…

5. Ebony and Ivory

The stars aligned for this one didn’t they! Black and white backdrop, clothes and masks make for some monochrome magic horseplay here.

4. WTF?

3. Photobomb

HELLO! Animal photobombs are all the rage on the interwebs but we applaud any bride willing to allow a horse head to photobomb her wedding photos.

2. Unicorn Jockey

I'm kind of a big deal

You’re kind of a big deal are you? That kind of goes without saying Ms. Nonchalantly-Riding-a-Freaking-Unicorn.

1. Mooholland Drive

Horse and cow masks

Agh! Those huge nostrils! That gleeful bovine grin! Like some sort of hideous noir nursery rhyme, we regret to say this image will stay with you for some time. A masterpiece.
